The Heart of the Movement: Empowering 4ocean Artisans
to Create Change

Dominic Manzo, 4ocean Content Producer

At 4ocean, the mission of ocean cleanup is not just about removing plastic and debris from our seas; it's also about creating a meaningful impact on the communities involved in this important work. One of the most inspiring aspects of this mission is the role of our artisans, who create the beautiful, handcrafted bracelets that we love so dearly. These bracelets symbolize 4ocean’s broader efforts to clean the ocean while also providing sustainable income and opportunities to local communities.

The story of 4ocean’s artisans is one of resilience, empowerment, and community. From the tranquil shores of Bali to several villages across Indonesia, hundreds of artisans are hard at work, transforming simple materials into beautiful creations that support the clean ocean movement.

Empowering Local Communities

For many of the artisans, their journey with 4ocean started with an opportunity to gain meaningful employment. Before joining 4ocean, many were stay-at-home parents or individuals with limited access to steady work. The chance to become part of a global movement has not only provided these artisans with a way to support their families but has also instilled a sense of pride in their craftsmanship and contribution to cleaner oceans.

In a recent interview, Iin, the head of the artisan team in Bali, shared how working with 4ocean has changed her life. "Before 4ocean, I was only a housewife and didn’t have a job. Now, I’ve been here for almost six years, and I’m able to help my family financially while doing something that matters to the environment."

This story is not unique. Across Indonesia, 4ocean’s artisan program employs hundreds of individuals, the majority of whom are women. These women are not just earning an income—they are learning valuable skills, connecting with their peers, and becoming part of a supportive community that celebrates their talents and hard work.

The Art of Making a Difference

The process of creating each 4ocean bracelet is intricate and thoughtful. It starts with sourcing materials that would otherwise contribute to waste, turning discarded plastics into something valuable. The artisans meticulously measure, cut, and assemble the bracelets, ensuring that each one meets the highest standards of quality.

“We take great pride in our work,” Iin explained. "Every bracelet is carefully crafted by hand. If something doesn’t meet the standard—whether it’s the wrong size, or if it’s dirty—we return it to the artisan to ensure it’s perfected before sending it out.

"This attention to detail reflects the dedication and care that the artisans pour into their work. The bracelets are more than just accessories; they are tangible symbols of hope for cleaner oceans and a healthier planet.

Flexible and Family-Friendly Work

One of the reasons the artisan program is so beloved by the women who participate in it is the flexibility it offers. Many of the artisans are mothers, and the ability to work from home while caring for their children is invaluable. "This is the best job for mothers," Iin said. "We can work while watching over our kids, and we don’t have to be in the workshop to do it…which gives us the freedom to balance our responsibilities at home.

"This flexibility is not only beneficial for the artisans themselves, but it also strengthens the community. By providing mothers with an opportunity to earn an income without sacrificing time with their families, 4ocean is helping to create a more sustainable future for these communities.

A Movement Beyond Bracelets

For many of the artisans, working with 4ocean has opened doors to new experiences and opportunities they never imagined. Iin fondly recalled a recent encounter with Reyanne Mustafa, another 4ocean artist who taught her new skills in embroidery. "It was an incredible experience," Iin said. "I learned so much, not just about making bracelets, but about other crafts as well. I’m grateful to 4ocean for giving us these chances."

The connection between the artisans and 4ocean goes beyond employment. It’s about creating a community that supports one another, both in terms of economic empowerment and personal growth. Many of the artisans have formed lasting friendships with their coworkers, and the camaraderie they share is second to none . “Meeting with my team helps me relieve stress. Life can be busy and difficult at home, but when I’m with my friends at work, we laugh together. It’s such a supportive environment.”
