80 Sacks of Hope: Real Action for a Cleaner Berawa Beach
Ucik, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent
The Call of the Tide
Berawa Beach has long been a familiar ground for the 4ocean Bali crew, but this time, the mission took a different turn. Instead of cleaning the usual western stretch, the team set their sights east — a side of the beach now seamlessly connected to Batubelig Beach via a newly constructed bridge. Flanked by luxurious beach clubs and high-end resorts, the crew initially assumed the sands would be fairly clean. They were wrong.
Armed with only a limited number of sacks, the crew was soon met by the harsh truth: plastic bottles, food wrappers, discarded buckets, fishing nets, and single-use plastics were strewn across the shoreline. What began as a 300-meter sweep on the Berawa side quickly escalated into a full-scale operation spanning two connected beaches.
From Surprise to Solidarity
Once the team crossed into Batubelig, the situation worsened. Trash lined the shore in staggering volumes — a stark contrast to the beautiful tourist photos often shared online. Motivated by their shared commitment to the ocean, one crew member raced back to retrieve more sacks from storage. That determination sparked a ripple effect. Local and international tourists, moved by the team's dedication, joined the cleanup.
In just under three hours, they filled over 80 sacks with debris — a total of 1,296.75 pounds of plastic waste. Among the waste were everyday culprits: straws, wrappers, netting, and even full-sized buckets. The beach, once buried under garbage, slowly began to breathe again.
A Truck, a Hotel, and a Helping Hand
Transporting the heavy sacks became its own adventure. The truck, attempting to inch closer to the beach, got stuck in the sand. But hope arrived when the LV8 hotel and beach club graciously granted access to their rear area, reducing what would’ve been a 3-kilometer haul down to just 1. This small act of kindness made a big difference, easing the load on a crew that had already given their all.
Ucik, who also edited the day’s video documentation, couldn’t hide his pride. “I’m incredibly proud of the team today — they went the extra mile to make the beach clean and beautiful again,” he said.
Protecting the Gift of Nature
Nature has given generously — from the bounty of the sea to the beauty of Bali’s coastlines. “Let’s work together to protect and preserve our environment for today and for future generations,” one crew member reflected. It’s a sentiment that echoes through every cleanup: this isn’t just about trash. It’s about stewardship, legacy, and the quiet revolution of real action.
