Kedonganan Beach: Battling Waves of Waste

Ucik, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent

Kedonganan Beach, a picturesque coastal stretch in Bali, has become a stark symbol of humanity's battle with plastic waste. On December 26, 2024, the 4ocean Denpasar crew braved stormy weather to tackle the ever-growing mountains of trash littering the beach. The scene was disheartening: plastic bottles, food packaging, straws, and even microplastics scattered as far as the eye could see, carried ashore by relentless waves.

Storms have worsened the situation, intensifying the accumulation of waste carried from nearby rivers. Despite the seemingly insurmountable task, the 4ocean team—led by Captain Agus and joined by crew members Mr. Ketut, Very Baskara, Wiradana, Putu Adi, Aftaf, Nurul Huda, Bagas, Mr. Made, and Dika—remains steadfast in their mission. "The ocean and rivers are not just for humans. They're homes for countless creatures. We must act responsibly," one team member reflected during the cleanup.

This cleanup mission was particularly challenging. The slippery terrain and harsh conditions demanded extra caution, while stormy weather tested both the team's stamina and morale. The massive amount of waste made progress painstakingly slow, and areas cleared in the morning were often reclaimed by new trash by the afternoon.

Yet, the team’s resolve never wavered. Each plastic bottle or fragment of microplastic removed was a small but meaningful step toward a cleaner, healthier beach. The crew collected countless items, including plastic buckets and straws, evidence of the overwhelming human impact on the environment.

Despite the challenges, the team found moments of inspiration. Passersby stopped to express their gratitude, and some even joined in, motivated by the 4ocean crew's dedication. These interactions underscored the importance of raising awareness about proper waste disposal and its impact on the environment.

“It’s not just about cleaning up,” said another team member. “It’s about showing others that change is possible. If everyone does their part, we can stop this tide of waste before it begins.”
