Stepping In for the River: Azenco Outdoor Join Forces to Protect Parirejo River

Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent

The Parirejo River has seen its fair share of heavy rain and flooding in recent weeks, but what the current carries downstream tells a deeper story, one of plastic pollution quietly choking waterways that feed the sea. To help turn the tide, the 4ocean Java Riverboom Team mobilized for a cleanup and maintenance operation along the newly installed boom net in Parirejo. This cleanup was supported by Azenco Outdoor, whose partnership made it possible for our crew to reach and operate in this high-impact area. While Azenco Outdoor wasn’t physically on-site, their support played a vital role in amplifying the mission’s reach, a powerful reminder that real environmental change begins when communities and partners work hand in hand.

Captain Saiful Kirom and his crew, Bisma Wirayuda and Fany Abdillah, set out early that morning armed with sacks, ropes, metal hooks, and protective gear. The chosen location was a newly designated section of the river, selected for its high potential for waste accumulation after a recent flood. When the floodwaters receded, the 4ocean boom net was visibly strained under the sheer weight of trapped debris: styrofoam, bottles, sandals, and tangled plastic bags stretched across the current.

Despite the slippery descent to the river and the fast-moving water, the crew quickly coordinated a safe, systematic approach. Saiful split tasks between retrieval, sorting, and hauling; ensuring that no one lost footing in the slick terrain. The cleanup required strength, precision, and above all, teamwork. “The current was strong, and every step had to be calculated,” said Saiful. “But every piece of waste we remove means one less danger for the ocean downstream.”

For hours, the crew worked in rhythm securing the boom, cutting tangled debris free, and collecting each sack with care. By the end of the operation, 31 sacks of waste were collected, weighing a total of 627.1 pounds. Of that, 584 pounds were plastic waste and 40.1 pounds were mixed materials. Most of what the team recovered were everyday items: plastic bottles, food wrappers, straws, and fragments of styrofoam; each a trace of how human habits ripple into waterways.

Even amid the exhaustion, the crew stayed motivated by a shared sense of purpose. “Today’s cleanup is a form of shared responsibility,” Saiful reflected. “Through this action, we hope to make a real contribution to maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the river, and to inspire more people to care.”

This effort wasn’t just about removing visible waste. The Parirejo cleanup also marked a test of the 4ocean boom net’s effectiveness, and the results were clear. The boom successfully prevented large amounts of plastic from drifting further downstream, showing how strategic infrastructure can intercept pollution before it reaches the sea. It’s an ongoing process, one that requires regular maintenance, quick response to weather shifts, and, most importantly, consistent support from partners like Azenco Outdoor.

Azenco Outdoor’s collaboration helped strengthen this initiative from the ground up, funding logistics, gear, and fuel that kept the operation running smoothly. Their partnership reflects how off-site support can create on-the-ground impact, ensuring that 4ocean’s cleanup crews can focus on what matters most: protecting rivers, coastlines, and the communities that depend on them.

Waste doesn’t disappear when it leaves sight: it flows, settles, and accumulates where nature can least afford it. Actions like this one in Parirejo show that environmental recovery is not just possible, but achievable through persistence and partnership. The 4ocean Java team continues to take concrete steps to protect waterways, from installing trash booms to conducting beach and mangrove cleanups, all working toward a single goal: reducing plastic pollution from upstream to ocean.

The Parirejo River may only represent one small link in a vast network of ecosystems, but cleanups like this prove that every link matters. With ongoing support from partners like Azenco Outdoor, each cleanup strengthens our collective ability to defend the planet’s lifelines: one river at a time.
