Three Days That Changed a River: The Sukosari Cleanup in Java
Dika, 4ocean Bali Content Correspondent
At the end of 2024, relentless rainfall overwhelmed rivers across Banyuwangi, Indonesia, leaving many waterways clogged with debris. Among the hardest hit was the Sukosari River—a vital lifeline for the local community and the birthplace of one of 4ocean Java’s team members, Dian Angga Saputra. Recognizing the urgency, the 4ocean Java team launched a three-day mission to restore the river’s flow.
On December 28, 2024, and continuing into the first week of 2025, the team—armed with sickles, iron rakes, and an unrelenting spirit—worked tirelessly to clear the blockage. The waste ranged from everyday items like sandals and Styrofoam to thorny bamboo branches that required careful navigation and removal.

Progress came in waves. Day 1 saw the team clear 35% of the obstruction, despite sharp bamboo and uneven terrain complicating their efforts. By Day 2, they had tackled 75% of the waste, spurred on by a growing sense of accomplishment. And on Day 3, they reached a triumphant milestone: 99% restoration of the river’s flow. In total, they collected 108 sacks of waste, weighing a staggering 5,261.25 lbs.
The impact was immediate and profound. The once-blocked river now flows freely, a testament to what determination and teamwork can achieve. The local community expressed heartfelt gratitude, inspired by the team’s dedication to protecting their shared environment.
For Dian Angga Saputra, the mission held deep personal significance.
“Sukosari Village is a place I hold very dear, as it is my birthplace. Together with the 4ocean Java River team, I worked to address one of the problems in my area: blockages in the Sukosari River caused by year-end floods. Within three days, we successfully cleaned the river of waste piles with highly satisfying results. I am extremely grateful that 4ocean Java has brought a tangible positive impact, not only for my family but also for the village of Sukosari.”
Despite the challenges of rainy weather, strong winds, sharp bamboo branches, and an uneven riverbed, the team’s determination never faltered. Armed with sickles and iron rakes, they skillfully cleared debris lodged in the upper branches to create space for efficient plastic waste collection. Their efforts not only surmounted these obstacles but also achieved remarkable results.
In total, the Sukosari River cleanup removed 5,261.25 pounds of plastic waste using 108 sacks. Key finds included Styrofoam, sandals, and other debris that once choked this vital waterway. This incredible achievement is a testament to the team’s resolve and their vision for a cleaner, healthier environment.
