Turning the Tide at Its Source: Kingspan Supports Riverboom Installations in Java

Turning Partnership into Progress
Across East Java’s canal networks and river systems, the 4ocean Java Team continues to push forward in its mission to stop plastic waste before it reaches the ocean. This latest effort, the installation and maintenance of riverbooms in Truko, Sukosari, and Kedungsari, was made possible through the partnership and support of Kingspan, whose commitment to sustainability has helped strengthen local cleanup operations throughout Indonesia.
Thanks to Kingspan’s partnership, the 4ocean Java Team was able to install a series of trash-trapping nets across three key waterways known to carry large amounts of plastic waste downstream. These riverbooms act as the first line of defense, catching floating debris before it disperses into larger bodies of water.
From Ditches to Rivers, From Rivers to the Sea
For many communities, small ditches and canals are lifelines, channels that nourish agriculture, carry rainwater, and sustain daily life. But when these waterways become conduits for household and urban waste, they also become part of a much larger problem. Recognizing this, Captain Saiful Kirom and his crew surveyed multiple high-risk locations to identify where these trash traps could make the most difference.
Just two days later, the teams revisited each site to check on the newly installed nets. What they saw was both sobering and rewarding: large clusters of plastic and mixed waste already caught by the barriers. The simple technology had begun doing its job, preventing hundreds of pounds of debris from continuing downstream.
Real Results in the Field
At the Truko Riverboom, the team collected 406.9 pounds of waste in total: 206.6 pounds of plastic and 200.3 pounds of mixed waste, filling 12 sacks. At the Sukosari Riverboom, they gathered 1,197.7 pounds of waste, including 507 pounds of plastic and 690.7 pounds of mixed waste, spread across 25 sacks. And at the Kedungsari Riverboom, the team removed 117 pounds of plastic waste from the canal.
The variety of debris was staggering: from plastic bottles, packaging, and straws to paint cans, glass bottles, and even old helmets. Each cleanup reinforced how much everyday waste still finds its way into natural water systems, and how crucial these nets are in stopping that flow.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of the 4ocean Java Team,” said Captain Saiful Kirom. “This experience has been a valuable milestone in my career journey, and I believe it will help me grow into a better person. I am fully committed to giving my best contribution in carrying out 4ocean Java’s mission. I hope to continue this work and create a positive impact on all forms of life affected by plastic pollution.”
For Saiful and his teammates, the work goes beyond physical labor. It’s about building habits of care and showing the surrounding communities that cleaner waterways are within reach — especially when supported by partnerships like the one with Kingspan.

Kingspan’s Role in Amplifying Impact
Through its collaboration with 4ocean, Kingspan is helping turn sustainable ideals into measurable impact. By supporting the installation and maintenance of riverbooms, Kingspan empowers local crews to intercept plastic waste closer to its source. These efforts not only help reduce marine pollution but also serve as visible, functional examples of what partnership-driven environmental action can achieve.
From providing essential materials to helping expand cleanup capacity, Kingspan’s support ensures that the 4ocean Java Team can operate more effectively across key regions. It’s a model of how corporate responsibility can translate into real, lasting environmental progress; one net, one action, and one community at a time.

Kingspan’s Role in Amplifying Impact
Cleaning the riverbooms wasn’t without its challenges. Uneven canal beds, tangled organic waste, and persistent microplastics all made the process more difficult. Yet the team’s determination remained unwavering. Every cleanup, every net installation, every pound of waste removed contributes to protecting ecosystems and human health alike.
The riverboom initiative, supported by Kingspan, stands as a powerful reminder that big change often begins with small, consistent actions. By catching waste before it can drift downstream, these simple nets protect not just rivers but the oceans beyond them.
The 4ocean Java Team continues to build on this momentum, fueled by partnerships and driven by purpose. Together with Kingspan, they’re proving that collaboration and commitment can transform the health of our waterways and safeguard the planet for generations to come.
