5 homemade eco products
Five of our favorite eco-friendly DIY beauty products include:
1. Rosewater toner
This rosewater toner helps the skin restore itself, promotes a healthy complexion, and is perfect for all skin types. Use organic roses when making rosewater toner to avoid the chemical sprays typical of commercial flowers.
- A spray bottle for storage
- Rose essential oil
- 3/4 cup organic rose petals
- Filtered water
Simmer the rose petals in a saucepan with just enough water to cover them. Once simmering, cover for about 30 minutes. Next, remove the rose petals from the water and place them in a glass container.
For the toner, add together one part rosewater to three parts filtered water. Add a few drops of rosewater essential oil into the mixture for scent. You now have a DIY beauty product that's good for you and the environment.
2. Coconut oil and coffee hand and body scrub
You guessed it — there are only two ingredients needed for this eco-friendly beauty product. Mix 1/4 cup coffee grounds and 1/2 cup softened coconut oil. Always use fresh, dry coffee grounds. Stir ingredients together to allow for an even mix of the coconut and coffee grounds. You'll notice the ingredients will start to firm up as you stir.
Once it’s stiffened, set the mixture in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to solidify. Refrigerate or store in a cool place.
3. DIY facial wash
One of our favorite varieties of DIY sustainable facial cleansers for all skin types consists of lavender essential oil, frankincense essential oil, ylang-ylang essential oil, vitamin E oil, almond oil, and castile soap.
To make this DIY sustainable face wash, simply mix water, liquid castile soap, essential oils, and carrier oil. You can customize the essential oils in this recipe based on your skin type. Add in helichrysum, ylang-ylang, rose, geranium, or patchouli. Shake and mix all the ingredients for a refreshing homemade facial cleanser.
4. Matcha green tea face mask
Our eco-friendly DIY matcha green tea face mask is simple and only calls for two ingredients — water and matcha green tea powder. Take one scoop, or one teaspoon, of matcha green tea powder and mix it with enough water to make it into a mask-like consistency.
Apply the mask to your face and neck area with a wide brush and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes. Wash off in warm water — and that's it! You can also try adding a dollop of yogurt or honey to the mixture for added moisture.
5. Lip balm
To make this eco-friendly lip balm, you’ll need one teaspoon beeswax, one teaspoon coconut oil, one teaspoon shea butter, lip balm flavoring for taste, a few drops of vitamin E oil, a small container for the lip balm, and a saucepan.
Melt all the ingredients in the saucepan and blend thoroughly. Place the mixture in the small container and allow it to cool until it's solid. Voilà! You now have a sustainable, super-moisturizing lip balm.
