PRODUCT STORY
The ocean’s unseen heroes

Drifting zooplankton, magnified

Floating plastic debris about to be recovered by 4ocean Bali, Indonesia
Plankton may not be the cutest or most charismatic ocean inhabitants, but these microscopic organisms are absolutely crucial to life on Earth. There are two types of plankton: phytoplankton, which are tiny plants that use photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen and are responsible for up to half of the oxygen we breathe, and zooplankton, which are tiny animals that eat phytoplankton and serve as prey for larger animals like krill, shrimp, fish, and some whales. Together, they form the base of the entire marine food chain.
Plastic, chemical, and nutrient pollution have a direct impact on plankton and all of the species that directly or indirectly rely on them as a food source. Climate change contributes to rising ocean temperatures that cause mass migrations and population increases that disrupt the natural balance of the ocean ecosystem. We can make a difference by reducing our plastic footprint, making informed choices, and advocating for ocean-friendly legislation.
Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia
Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.
As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.
Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
