PRODUCT STORY

Masters of disguise

Octopus stretching, Adriatic Sea, Croatia

Octopus hiding in plastic water bottle, Costa Brava, Spain

We know plastic pollution affects more than 800 species of marine animal. While we don’t know exactly how it impacts octopuses, we do know that we need to make sure plastic products aren’t ending up in our ocean in the first place.

Research over the last few decades has found that octopuses can solve problems, remember solutions, navigate complex mazes, and take things apart just for fun. They’re also masters of disguise and can instantaneously change their skin color and texture to match their surroundings while their soft, pliable bodies can fit into impossibly small spaces.

There are around 300 incredible species of octopus living in the ocean. They can be found everywhere from coral reefs to the deepest parts of the open ocean. But everywhere you find an octopus in its natural habitat, you can also find an unnatural predator: ocean plastic.

From Bali, with love.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia.

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
