PRODUCT STORY

Not the ocean’s real killer

Southern resident orca K35 breaches en route to Salish Sea, California

Beached orca died with stomach full of plastic, South Africa

The Southern resident population of orcas is failing, so the entire ecosystem beneath it is failing. We created this mess and it is up to us to fix it.

Shari Tarantino

President

Orca Conservancy

Orcas are nicknamed “killer whales” because they have a reputation for being ferocious predators, but these highly intelligent, deeply social, and enormously powerful animals are actually not whales at all. They’re the largest member of the dolphin family.

Orcas in the wild face many threats including ocean plastic, chemical pollution, entanglement in marine debris, noise pollution, commercial hunting, captivity, decreased prey, and climate change.

The Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest are a microcosm that shows us the impact of these threats and just how dire the need for action really is.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
