Leatherback sea turtles are the oldest turtles in the world. Their family tree can be traced back more than 100 million years to a time when dinosaurs still walked the earth. They survived even when the dinosaurs went extinct. But now this once-prevalent species is facing its own extinction.

Leatherback sea turtles are the ocean’s major jellyfish predator. As such, they’re well-adapted to consuming this slippery meal. Their mouths and throats are lined with hundreds of long, down-ward facing spines that prevent jellies from slipping out of their mouths.

But in the dark and sometimes murky waters of the ocean, plastic bags, wrappers, balloons, and other plastic debris can look and taste a lot like jellyfish. And just like jellyfish, leatherbacks can’t regurgitate plastic once they’ve ingested it. Instead, the plastic they consume becomes impacted in their gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to chronic illnesses, infections, or death.

From Bali, with love.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia.

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
