PARTNER OF THE MONTH
Healthy Reefs for Healthy People
The Healthy Reefs for Healthy People initiative (HRI) began in 2003 on the premise that healthy reefs are essential to sustaining healthy people. In turn, only when local people are healthy and thriving can they be expected to protect the reefs and other natural resources on which their livelihoods and quality of life depend.
Hosted by the Mesoamerican Reef Fund and the Smithsonian Institution, more than 70 partner organizations dedicated to conserving the MAR participate in this vibrant initiative. They collaborate in a massive data collection effort that quantitatively assesses reef health and informs science-based management recommendations. HRI was the first group in the world to develop eco-health indicators and issue report cards for this complex coral reef ecosystem.
