PRODUCT STORY
Masters of the wind and sea

Juvenile black-browed albatross, Isla de Lobos, Uruguay

The plastic albatrosses consume will last far longer than their bones; this one perished on a beach in Australia
Albatrosses are one of the most extraordinary birds on the planet. They have a lifespan of up to 60 years and spend more than 80% of their lives at sea. Masters of the sky, they soar over vast distances and ride ocean air currents for hours, even days, at a time. They form pair bonds that often last a lifetime and only come back to land to mate, lay eggs, and raise chicks with their partner.
Albatrosses are not particularly picky eaters. They catch prey by making long, shallow dives and skimming their beaks along the water. When an albatross makes a catch, it quickly ascends and swallows its prey whole. While this has worked for the albatross for millennia, plastic pollution has made this type of foraging an enormous vulnerability.
There are 22 species of albatross in the world. Every single one is considered vulnerable, threatened, near-threatened, or endangered. Saving these awe-inspiring birds is just one of the many reasons why our mission to end the ocean plastic crisis is so urgent.
Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia
Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.
As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.
Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
