We introduced our limited edition Whale Shark Bracelets in partnership with Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation to raise awareness about the human threats that are causing whale shark populations to decline. For every Whale Shark 2-Pound Pack sold this month, we’ll pull two pounds of trash from the ocean and donate $2 to our partner of the month.

Made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic, the pastel pink bracelet cords represent the importance of continued research and education that can help save this endangered species.

PRODUCT STORY

Big mouths, tiny plastics

Whale shark feeding on plankton, Cenderawasih Bay, Indonesia

Deceased whale shark, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

The oceans are very resilient. In spite of our overexploitation of all marine resources, with better management, better science, and better conservation, they will bounce back — and they can bounce back really quickly.

Dr. Guy Harvey

Founder, Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation

Don’t let their name fool you! Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are actually a harmless filter-feeding species of shark. About the size of a school bus with a mouth that’s a meter wide, whale sharks eat by straining small organisms like plankton, schooling fish, and squid from the water.

The world’s whale shark population has decreased by more than half in just 75 years. Research on these elusive creatures and their interaction with marine debris is only starting to emerge, but recent findings don’t paint a happy picture for whale sharks.

In addition to finding microplastic in their gills and all types of marine debris in their stomachs, researchers have also learned that exposure to the toxins absorbed by ocean plastic can alter their hormones and cause health and reproductive issues.

Despite their endangered status and global conservation efforts, overfishing and illegal hunting are still threats. By showing hunting communities that whale sharks are actually worth more alive, they’re able to change their relationship with these animals and become some of their greatest protectors.

From Bali, with love.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia.

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
