PRODUCT STORY

Fabulously flamboyant

Chilean flamingo, South America

A flamboyance of flamingos, Mumbai, India

Flamingo societies are complex and formed of long-standing friendships rather than loose, random connections. Flamingos have long lives and their friendships are stable over a period of years.

Paul Rose

Lecturer, University of Exeter

Research Associate, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust

With legs like stilts, beaks like boomerangs, and flamboyant pink feathers, flamingos are perhaps the most recognizable wading bird in the world. If they had a catchphrase, it would be “you are what you eat,” since their impossibly beautiful coloring comes from the beta carotene in the crustaceans, mollusks, plankton, and algae they consume.

Flamingos live among the shallow lakes, mangrove swamps, sandy islands, and coastal areas of Africa, Asia, America, and Europe. While no flamingo species is considered endangered at this time, three of the six flamingo species are considered near threatened.

Because of their distinct appearance, flamingos are fabulous wildlife ambassadors that illustrate the beauty and diversity we stand to lose if we fail to address the threats they face. The biggest challenges in conserving flamingos and other wading birds include plastic and chemical pollution, climate change, habitat loss, and the animal entertainment industry.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
