PRODUCT STORY

Taking more means having less

Common dolphin feeding on sardines, East London, South Africa

Fish harvested in purse seine net, Northern Palawan, Philippines

When you overfish, you collapse that whole marine environment from the surface down to the smallest, minute wildlife at the bottom of that food chain.

SeaLegacy

The world’s exponential population growth has increased the global demand for fish. Our demand is so great that many species simply can’t reproduce fast enough to replace what we take. Without giving them opportunities to recover their populations, we’re placing sustained pressure on many species and fishing them to the brink of extinction.

Lost and abandoned fishing gear, a troubling consequence of commercial fishing, accounts for about 10 percent of all marine debris. Each year, countless animals are entangled and injured as they struggle to escape. The ones who can’t free themselves suffocate and drown.

By ending harmful fishing practices, supporting sustainable fisheries, and establishing marine protected areas, we can help overfished species recover.

From Bali, with love.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia.

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
