PRODUCT STORY
Big mouths. Tiny plastics.

Whale shark feeds with its mouth open, Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Whale shark filter feeds in polluted water
Research on these elusive creatures and their interaction with marine debris is only starting to emerge, but recent findings don’t paint a happy picture for whale sharks. In addition to finding microplastic in their gills and all types of marine debris in their stomachs, researchers have also learned that exposure to the toxins absorbed by ocean plastic can alter their hormones and lead to a variety of health and reproductive issues.
Despite their endangered status and global conservation efforts, whale sharks’ meat, fins, and oil are still highly valued in international markets. As such, overfishing remains a major ongoing threat to whale shark populations, especially those in unregulated areas. Entanglement in plastic fishing gear and bycatch are also potentially fatal threats associated with the commercial fishing industry.
From Bali, with love.
Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia.
Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.
As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.
Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
