PRODUCT STORY

Olympians of the ocean

White-sided dolphin, Pacific Ocean

Ghost nets are a significant threat to white-sided dolphins

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.

White-sided dolphins, named for their distinctive coloring, are highly intelligent, highly social, and extremely playful. They can often be seen “bow riding,” or swimming near the front of a ship, and jumping, flipping, somersaulting, or even spinning in the air. Their acrobatic displays can put even the greatest Olympians to shame.

While they’re not endangered or threatened at this time, they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Like all dolphins, they are at risk for both plastic ingestion and entanglement in fishing gear. They’re also sometimes killed in dolphin hunts in places like Japan and Greenland.

By ending our reliance on single-use plastics, supporting sustainable fisheries, reporting marine life in distress and fisheries violations to NOAA Fisheries Enforcement, and keeping our distance while enjoying our marine life, we can ensure these animals thrive for generations to come.

Hand assembled by an artisan in Bali, Indonesia

Purchasing a 4ocean bracelet does more than clean the ocean. It also creates sustainable, living-wage jobs.

As soon as our beads, cords, and charms reach our main facility in Denpasar, Bali, a crew loads up our van and motorbikes to distribute these components to artisans in remote villages scattered across the island.

Women comprise 80 percent of this workforce. In Bali, women tend to assume the role of primary caretakers for their families, which means their job opportunities are limited. Because they’re able to hand assemble our bracelets in their homes and village centers, more women are able to join the workforce while continuing to care for their families.
