Discover fun facts about mako sharks, their importance in the marine ecosystem, the threats they face, and what we can do to help protect them

Beneath the surface of our vast oceans, a fascinating predator roams with unmatched agility and speed—the majestic mako shark. Known for their sleek bodies and remarkable hunting prowess, mako sharks are a crucial part of the marine ecosystem. However, these remarkable creatures face numerous threats that jeopardize their existence.

Let’s explore some fun facts about mako sharks, their significance in the marine ecosystem, the threats they face, and how we can join forces to protect them.

  • Speed Demons: Mako sharks are the fastest swimming sharks, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour (72 km/h). Their streamlined bodies and long, slim tails enable them to swiftly chase down prey, making them formidable hunters.
  • Jaws of Steel: Mako sharks possess impressive jaws filled with sharp, serrated teeth. These teeth enable them to grasp and tear apart prey efficiently—usually fast-swimming fish like tuna and mackerel.
  • Acrobatic Stunners: Makos are known for their breathtaking aerial displays. They are capable of leaping out of the water, sometimes reaching heights of up to 30 feet (9 meters). These acrobatics help them disorient their prey and escape predators.

The ultimate apex predators, mako sharks help regulate populations of smaller fish species, preventing them from becoming overabundant and disturbing the ecosystem's delicate balance. By controlling the abundance of prey species, mako sharks indirectly contribute to the health and biodiversity of the marine environment.

Sadly, both species of mako sharks, the Shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) and Longfin mako (Isurus paucus), are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

This designation highlights the urgent need for action to protect these magnificent creatures from the range of threats that contribute to their declining population, including:

  • Overfishing: Makos are often targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries for their meat, fins, and liver oil. Unsustainable fishing practices, such as longline fishing and shark finning, have significantly impacted their populations.
  • Habitat Loss: As highly migratory species, mako sharks rely on vast oceanic habitats. However, habitat degradation, including climate change-induced ocean warming, affects their ability to find suitable breeding and foraging grounds.
  • Plastic Pollution: Like many marine species, mako sharks are also affected by the detrimental impacts of plastic pollution. They often mistake floating debris, particularly plastic fragments and bags, for prey. Ingestion of plastic can lead to internal injuries, digestive issues, and even death. They can also get tangled in ghost nets—a catch-all term for abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear that’s typically made from plastic. Moreover, the toxic chemicals found in plastics can accumulate in the tissues of these sharks, causing long-term health issues and affecting their reproductive capabilities.

The presence of plastics in the ocean disrupts the natural balance and threatens the survival of not only mako sharks but also numerous other marine species. Here’s how we can all do our part to help:

  • Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Minimize the consumption of single-use plastics such as plastic bags, bottles, and straws. Opt for reusable alternatives to lessen the amount of plastic waste ending up in our oceans.
  • Support Sustainable Fisheries: Choose seafood from sustainable sources and support fishing practices that prioritize conservation. Look for certifications like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to ensure you're making responsible seafood choices.
  • Advocate for Policy Changes: Stay informed about local and international policies related to shark conservation. Support organizations working to establish stricter regulations against shark finning and overfishing.

Mako sharks, with their remarkable speed and grace, are vital guardians of our oceans. They play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems, yet their populations face significant threats. By taking action against plastic pollution, supporting sustainable fishing practices, and advocating for their protection, we can make a difference in preserving the future of these remarkable creatures.

We introduced our limited edition Mako Shark Bracelets to help raise awareness about threats facing this endangered species and the importance of protecting and restoring their populations. Do your part and order a bracelet today!
