Freedom to Breathe: Fighting Plastic Pollution Together
Ucik, 4ocean Indonesia Content Correspondent
This year’s Independence Day celebration at the 4ocean facility in Denpasar was more than just games and laughter—it was a moment of unity, teamwork, and reflection. Our crew came together not only to honor Indonesia’s historic day but also to strengthen the bonds between us as a team committed to protecting the ocean. The atmosphere was lively and full of energy, with every activity designed to spark solidarity, cooperation, and the spirit of working hand in hand.
What made the day even more meaningful was how we wove environmental action into the celebration. Alongside the traditional Independence Day games, we introduced something new: a plastic waste sorting competition. This wasn’t just a fun challenge—it was an opportunity to spread awareness about the importance of separating waste properly. By turning awareness into action, we celebrated our independence while also reinforcing our mission to keep Indonesia’s beaches and oceans clean.
For us, these moments of joy carried deeper meaning. Independence is not only about the freedom we celebrate each year, but also about taking real steps to free our nation from plastic waste. With every sack sorted and every laugh shared, we felt the power of small steps turning into big change.
We are deeply grateful to 4ocean for their unwavering support in Bali, Java, and across Indonesia. Their commitment strengthens our resolve to keep going. Our greatest hope is that the spirit of independence will continue to inspire collective action—so that one day, Indonesia will be truly free, not just from colonial rule of the past, but also from the plastic pollution that threatens our future.
“Sorting plastic might seem like a simple task,” one team member reflected, “but when we do it together, it reminds us that caring for the environment is everyone’s responsibility.” That sense of shared responsibility was felt throughout the day, showing that when communities unite with purpose, meaningful impact follows.
Being free from plastic waste isn’t easy, but we will keep pushing forward—through social media campaigns, direct community outreach, and real action in the field. We want more people in Indonesia to understand the harm of plastic waste and join us in protecting the ocean we all depend on.
Together with 4ocean, let’s work toward an Indonesia free from plastic. Merdeka!
