Muncar Pier Cleanup SuPPORTED BY Frank Family Vineyards

On February 9, 2026, Team River 4ocean Java carried out a shoreline cleanup at Muncar Pier with the support of our partner Frank Family Vineyards. Known as one of the busiest fishing hubs in Banyuwangi, the pier plays a vital role in the local economy. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most polluted coastal areas in the region, where plastic waste and debris accumulate from daily activity and from materials carried in by ocean currents during the west monsoon season.
Before heading to the site, Captain Krisna Iza Rabindra and the crew prepared the necessary cleanup equipment and safety gear at the 4ocean Java base. Because the pier is located relatively close to the base, the team was able to mobilize quickly. Upon arrival, they were immediately met with piles of scattered waste around the pier area. Fishermen were busy preparing their boats and returning from their morning trips as the team began clearing the shoreline.
Working steadily along the pier, the crew collected plastic bags, bottles, food packaging, sandals, shoes, straws, plastic pipes, clothing, and other debris that had accumulated among the docks and along the sand. As the cleanup progressed, sack after sack filled with recovered waste. After several hours of work, the team gathered the collected debris at a designated weighing point.
By the end of the cleanup, 36 sacks of waste had been removed from Muncar Pier, totaling 1,998.3 pounds. This included 517.2 pounds of plastic waste in 19 sacks, 512.1 pounds of mixed waste in nine sacks, and 969 pounds of non plastic waste in eight sacks. Once documented and weighed, the collected material was transported back to the 4ocean Java base for proper handling.
For crew member Biatra Mardianto, the work represents a long term commitment to protecting marine ecosystems. He shared, “Our mission is not only to remove waste and clean the beach, but also to protect the marine ecosystem from long term pollution. We will never lose our spirit in fighting waste in the ocean, beaches, rivers, and other waterways, especially plastic waste.”
The cleanup presented several challenges, particularly due to the large amount of heavy non plastic debris found in the area. Transporting these materials required extra effort and coordination from the team to move the filled sacks to the weighing point.
Muncar Pier stands as an important center of fishing activity and a lifeline for local communities. However, high levels of activity often bring increased waste generation, especially plastic materials that can easily enter the sea if not managed properly. Left unchecked, this pollution threatens marine life that fishermen themselves rely on.
Every sack collected represents more than waste removed from the shoreline. It reflects care, responsibility, and a shared effort to protect the ocean. With the support of Frank Family Vineyards, Team River 4ocean Java will continue carrying out routine cleanups at locations like Muncar Pier, demonstrating that meaningful environmental change begins with consistent action and collective commitment.
