Rio Motagua Boom System Reinstallation

A quick update on A River of Change from 4ocean x Corona

On July 31, 2023, our Boom Cleanup Team in Guatemala arrived for work only to discover that the Rio Motagua had risen 10 feet overnight, carrying our boom system downstream.

While we waited for the waters to recede, we worked with our engineers to determine where the boom system failed and, after a bit of noodling, decided that our best course of action would be to use steel chains to secure the boom sections to the riverbank and stronger anchors to secure the boom to the riverbed.

Now that the waters have reached a workable level, we’re back out here working to reinstall the boom. Let’s review our progress so far!

Acquiring the materials we need to reinstall the full length of the primary boom has proven difficult, so we had to get a little scrappy in the meantime.

The great news is that all of our boom systems are modular, so we can easily take them apart and reconfigure them as needed, which really came in handy here.

Instead of waiting for all the replacement parts of our primary boom system, we borrowed the black section of our secondary boom system, which is typically used to catch any overflow from the primary boom system.

Larger in diameter and shorter in length than our primary boom system, using our secondary boom as an interim solution will allow us to measure the effectiveness of our new anchoring system over the coming weeks.

This summer’s flood event has shifted the riverbed and surrounding riverbank, so we’ll also continue to monitor the flow pattern of the river and make adjustments to optimize the performance of our secondary boom.

We’ve also outfitted the boom with a GPS tracker that gives our teams more advanced monitoring capabilities just in case the Rio Motagua starts raging and rising floodwaters impact our new anchoring system.
