600 Pounds in One Morning: A Coastal Cleanup with Purpose
Ucik, 4ocean Indonesia Content Correspondent
Our first meeting with the Santika Sahabat Bumi team sparked something special. This group, a collaboration between Hotel Santika, Amaris Hotel, and Kampi Hotel, saw firsthand the passion we bring for ocean conservation during a cleanup at Kelan Beach. Inspired by the experience, they eagerly joined forces with us for a larger cleanup event at Batubelig Beach.
More than 100 hotel staff and management arrived ready to roll up their sleeves and make a tangible difference. The atmosphere buzzed with energy and commitment, reflecting a genuine care for sustainability and protecting Bali’s coastal ecosystems. This wasn’t just about clearing trash; it was about building a strong partnership between the hospitality industry and local communities. Together, they showed that even small, collective actions can spark waves of lasting environmental change.
The day started early, with participants gathering for a briefing on the importance of coastal protection and guidance on sorting waste properly. As the cleanup progressed, teams worked efficiently across the shoreline, removing everything from plastic bottles and discarded fishing nets to food wrappers and even used helmets and oil containers.
By the end of the morning, the team had removed an impressive 615.5 pounds of trash — 245.2 pounds of plastic waste and 370.3 pounds of mixed materials. Despite overcast skies and waves splashing over their feet, spirits stayed high, showing just how much this mission mattered to everyone involved.
One moment that stood out was when a housekeeping staff member shared her thoughts: “I usually clean hotel rooms. Today, I’m cleaning nature. It feels completely different.” This simple reflection captured the heart of the event — a powerful reminder that caring for our planet is a shared responsibility that crosses all walks of life.
The cleanup concluded with a group reflection, emphasizing that when communities and businesses unite, even the toughest challenges can be met with hope and action. The collaboration between 4ocean and the Santika Sahabat Bumi team is a shining example of how environmental stewardship can grow through teamwork and education.
This event is just the beginning. As we continue to work together, we hope to inspire more partnerships like this, fueling a movement that ensures Bali’s beaches remain beautiful and thriving for generations to come.
