Cleaning the Barrier That Protects the River

Some cleanup efforts begin before the waste ever reaches the river.
At Bongkoran Riverboom, the 4ocean Java Riverboom Team maintains a debris collection net designed to intercept trash carried downstream before it can continue through the waterway. The barrier serves as a critical checkpoint, capturing pollution that would otherwise travel farther into connected rivers and, eventually, the ocean.
On July 1, the team returned for another routine maintenance cleanup.
After arriving at the site, they found the collection net almost completely clogged with debris. Plastic waste, household refuse, and organic material had accumulated across the barrier, preventing it from operating at full capacity and illustrating just how much waste continues to enter the ditch from upstream communities.
Without delay, the crew began restoring the barrier.

Working together, the team carefully removed the trapped waste from the collection net and placed it into waiting sacks along the riverbank.
Although the accumulated debris produced a strong odor, the crew remained focused throughout the operation. Piece by piece, the barrier slowly reappeared as the waste was removed, allowing the system to function as intended once again.
Within approximately an hour, the net had been completely cleared and restored to full operation.
The filled sacks were gathered in a designated staging area before each one was weighed and documented. Once the cleanup was complete, the collected debris was loaded onto a 4ocean pickup truck and transported back to the 4ocean Java base for sorting and further processing.
Restoring the River's First Line of Defense
Unlike many cleanup operations that focus on debris already scattered throughout waterways, maintaining a Riverboom barrier prevents pollution from traveling farther downstream.
During the cleanup, the team recovered plastic cups, plastic bags, plastic bottles, Styrofoam, sandals, floor mats, used sacks, organic waste, and other household debris that had accumulated inside the net.
Every item removed represented pollution that had been intercepted before it could continue through the watershed.
Just as importantly, the cleanup restored the barrier's ability to continue capturing future debris carried by the current.
Impact Details
By the end of the operation, the 4ocean Java Riverboom Team had removed a total of 384.90 pounds of debris, filling 12 sacks collected from the Bongkoran Riverboom.
The cleanup included 317.20 pounds of plastic waste across 11 sacks and 67.70 pounds of mixed waste collected in one additional sack. Once every sack had been weighed and documented, the material was transported back to the 4ocean Java base for responsible processing.
The results demonstrate how routine maintenance of a single barrier can prevent hundreds of pounds of waste from continuing downstream.
The cleanup itself presented few logistical challenges, allowing the crew to complete the operation efficiently.
The greatest difficulty came from the condition of the accumulated waste. After sitting in the collection net for days, the debris produced a strong odor that made the work unpleasant. Even so, the team remained focused until the barrier had been fully restored.

The Riverboom at Bongkoran Ditch is more than a cleanup tool. It is a visible reminder of the choices made upstream every day.
Every plastic bottle, Styrofoam container, and household item caught in the barrier reflects waste that was improperly discarded before entering the waterway. Left unchecked, this debris would continue downstream, threatening aquatic ecosystems, reducing water quality, and increasing the risk of flooding caused by blocked channels.

The barrier provides an important final line of defense, but it cannot solve the problem on its own.
Creating cleaner rivers begins long before waste reaches a collection net. Responsible disposal, better waste management, and reducing reliance on single-use plastics remain the most effective ways to keep waterways healthy.
