Cleaning the Shores of G-Land Beach
Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent
The journey to G-Land Beach began early for the 4ocean Java Beach Team.
Located approximately 33 kilometers from the 4ocean Java base, the beach requires a drive of nearly an hour and a half through one of East Java's most remote coastal regions. Known internationally for its powerful waves and natural beauty, G-Land attracts visitors from around the world. Yet even this iconic shoreline is not immune to the growing problem of plastic pollution.
Led by Team Captain Rakha Bahtiyan, the crew set out with a clear objective: remove as much waste as possible before it could continue impacting the coastal ecosystem.
After arriving at the beach, the team gathered for a short briefing and prepared their equipment, including sacks, ropes, cutters, and personal protective gear. Once preparations were complete, they spread out across the shoreline and began working section by section.
Plastic bottles, packaging, foam, cups, and other debris were collected one piece at a time and placed into waiting sacks. As the morning progressed, rows of filled sacks began appearing along the beach, visual proof of both the scale of the problem and the team's efforts to address it.
The tropical heat intensified throughout the day, but the crew continued working steadily. With every stretch of coastline cleared, the shoreline began to look a little closer to what it should be.
After several hours of cleanup, the team gathered all filled sacks at a designated weighing area. Each sack was weighed and recorded to accurately measure the day's impact.
By the end of the operation, the team had removed 444.4 pounds of plastic waste, filling 55 sacks with debris collected from G-Land Beach.
For crew member Aby Amanda Putra, the work carries meaning beyond the numbers. “Being part of the 4ocean Java team has made me realize that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. I am very happy to contribute to preserving nature from plastic pollution. Through these consistent efforts, we strongly believe that we can create meaningful change for future generations.”
Fortunately, the team did not encounter any major obstacles during the cleanup, allowing them to focus entirely on removing waste from the shoreline.
While the beach looked cleaner by the end of the day, the debris collected serves as a reminder of a larger challenge. Plastic pollution continues to reach coastal environments through rivers, improper waste disposal, and everyday reliance on single-use plastics. Once in the environment, plastic can persist for decades, eventually breaking down into microplastics that threaten marine ecosystems and can enter the food chain.
The solution extends beyond cleanup efforts alone.
Reducing single-use plastics, improving waste management systems, and building greater environmental awareness are all essential steps toward preventing pollution before it reaches the ocean.
For the 4ocean Java Beach Team, every cleanup is part of a larger mission. Each sack collected represents a step toward healthier coastlines, cleaner oceans, and a future where places like G-Land Beach can be enjoyed without the growing burden of plastic waste.
Protecting that future begins with action today.
