Clearing the Rejoagung Drainage with Support from E-cloth

Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent

With support from our partner E-Cloth, the 4ocean Java Riverboom Team carried out a drainage cleanup in Rejoagung Village after piles of waste were discovered blocking the waterway. The cleanup was initiated when one of the team members noticed significant waste accumulation in the drainage system and immediately reported it to the 4ocean Java team. Recognizing the potential risk of flooding and environmental damage, the team responded quickly and prepared to take action.

Led by Captain Ferri Prasetiawan, Riverboom Teams 1 and 2 traveled to the site with full enthusiasm and preparation. The crew brought essential equipment including sacks, ropes, ground forks, sickles, and personal protective gear to ensure the cleanup could be done safely and efficiently. Upon arrival, the team found large amounts of household waste that had been carried downstream from higher ground by rainwater and upstream flow.

The waste consisted of both plastic and organic materials. Plastic bags, bottles, packaging, foam, sandals, cans, shoes, diapers, and organic waste were tightly packed along the drainage, restricting water flow. Aquatic plants covering the surface made the cleanup more challenging, as much of the waste was trapped beneath them. To overcome this, the team worked systematically by first clearing the plants before removing the waste underneath.

Despite the challenging conditions, the cleanup progressed steadily. Over several hours, the Riverboom Team collected a total of 17 sacks of waste weighing 792.5 pounds. This included 521.1 pounds of plastic waste across 13 sacks and 271.4 pounds of mixed waste contained in 4 sacks. As the drainage cleared, water began to flow more freely, reducing the immediate risk of blockage and flooding in the surrounding area.

From the field, Captain Ferri Prasetiawan shared his reflection on the day’s work. He expressed pride in being part of the 4ocean Java team, not simply for cleaning the drainage, but for taking responsibility in protecting nature and life. He emphasized that maintaining environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility and that the team remains ready to respond wherever plastic pollution affects local ecosystems.

The cleanup also served an educational purpose for the surrounding community. Beyond removing waste, the team aimed to demonstrate through action why dumping garbage into drainage systems leads to flooding, water pollution, and threats to marine life downstream. The 4ocean Java team believes meaningful change begins with awareness and consistent action.

With continued support from partners like E-Cloth, the Riverboom Team remains committed to protecting drainage systems, rivers, and oceans. By restoring these waterways step by step, the team hopes to inspire communities to take part in keeping their environment clean and healthy so that all forms of life can benefit now and in the future.
