Collaboration for Change at Plengsengan Beach

On July 21, the 4ocean Java Beach Team joined a community-wide cleanup effort at Plengsengan Beach after receiving an invitation from the Banyuwangi Environmental Agency to participate in the Gerakan Indonesia Asri (Beautiful Indonesia Movement). Representing 4ocean Java, Beach Team 2 worked alongside local organizations and volunteers to restore the coastline, demonstrating how collaboration can strengthen environmental stewardship. Together, participants removed hundreds of pounds of marine debris from the beach and surrounding mangrove forest, reinforcing the idea that lasting change is built through collective action.
A Shared Mission Begins Early
The day began well before sunrise. After 4ocean Java Manager Yohan Efendi assigned Darys Eka Setiawan's team to represent the organization, the crew gathered at the 4ocean Java base to prepare collection sacks, gloves, boots, and other personal protective equipment needed for the cleanup.
By 5:00 a.m., the team departed for Plengsengan Beach in a 4ocean operational vehicle. When they arrived, the shoreline was already buzzing with activity as volunteers, community groups, and environmental organizations assembled with a common goal: protecting one of Banyuwangi's coastal treasures.
Following the opening ceremony at 8:00 a.m., the cleanup officially began.
Cleaning Every Corner of the Coast
The 4ocean Java Beach Team focused first on the rocky shoreline along the northern section of Plengsengan Beach. Plastic bottles, food packaging, Styrofoam, and other marine debris had become lodged between the rocks, where waves had repeatedly pushed them beyond easy reach.
The crew worked carefully through these natural formations, ensuring that even small pieces of plastic were recovered. Waste left behind in these narrow spaces could easily wash back into the ocean during the next high tide, making thorough cleanup essential.
After completing the rocky section, the team continued into a nearby mangrove forest, where another challenge awaited. Debris had become entangled among the dense roots, requiring patience and teamwork to remove without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. For several hours, the crew carefully filled sack after sack before transporting the recovered debris to a designated staging area for weighing.
Impact Details
The cleanup at Plengsengan Beach resulted in the removal of 919.40 pounds of plastic waste, filling 39 collection sacks. The team recovered a wide variety of marine debris, including plastic bags, used beverage bottles, Styrofoam food containers, and other discarded materials that threatened both the shoreline and nearby mangrove habitat.
The rocky shoreline presented the day's greatest obstacle. Much of the debris had become tightly wedged into narrow crevices between rocks, forcing the crew to work carefully to recover every piece without risking injury or leaving waste behind.
The results reflect one of the largest cleanup efforts of the month while highlighting the scale of the pollution that continues to reach this shoreline.
The mangrove forest required a different approach. Team members navigated carefully around exposed roots while removing debris caught within the vegetation, balancing efficiency with the need to protect one of the coast's most important ecosystems.

More Than a Cleanup
Plengsengan Beach demonstrated that environmental restoration is most effective when communities work together. By bringing government agencies, local organizations, and cleanup crews into a single effort, the Gerakan Indonesia Asri event showed that protecting Indonesia's coastlines is a shared responsibility.
The cleanup also highlighted the critical role of rocky shores and mangrove forests in coastal ecosystems. These habitats provide shelter for countless marine species while helping stabilize shorelines and filter pollutants. When plastic waste accumulates in these environments, it threatens wildlife directly and eventually breaks down into microplastics that can enter the food chain.
Every sack collected at Plengsengan Beach represented more than debris removed from the environment. It reflected the power of collaboration, the value of consistent stewardship, and the belief that healthier coastlines begin with people choosing to act together. Through partnerships like these and continued cleanup efforts, the 4ocean Java Beach Team remains committed to protecting Indonesia's beaches for the communities and wildlife that depend on them.
