Pang-Pang River Cleanup With Support From ERANGE EV Tires

Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent

Just 200 meters from the 4ocean Java base, the Pang-Pang River became the focus of an urgent cleanup following severe flooding in the area. Supported by our partner, ERANGE EV Tires, the 4ocean Java River Team mobilized quickly to respond to the surge of debris carried downstream by strong flood currents. The rising water had submerged riverside trees and left large amounts of waste tangled high in branches and roots, transforming the river into a stark reminder of how floods amplify existing pollution problems.

Before beginning the cleanup, the team conducted a short coordination meeting to assign roles and review safety measures. Equipped with full protective gear and the necessary tools, the crew moved directly into the most heavily impacted sections of the river. Their focus was on areas where trash had become deeply lodged between trees and vegetation, requiring careful and deliberate removal to avoid injury and further environmental damage.

Over several hours, the River Team worked methodically, extracting waste trapped in branches, roots, and along the riverbanks. Each piece was collected and secured into prepared sacks, which were later transported back to the 4ocean Java base using a 4ocean pickup truck. By the end of the operation, the team had filled dozens of sacks with flood-deposited debris, restoring visible flow and reducing blockages along the river.

The cleanup resulted in the removal of 1,947.6 pounds of waste, spread across 32 sacks. Plastic waste made up a significant portion of what was collected, including plastic bags, beverage bottles, food packaging foam, and other single-use plastics. The team also encountered non-plastic waste such as cans, fabric, diapers, and mixed materials, highlighting how household waste continues to enter river systems during heavy rainfall and flooding events.

Hendrik Prastyo, a member of the River Team, reflected on the experience: “The condition of the Pang-Pang River after the flood was extremely concerning. Plastic waste trapped high in tree branches clearly showed how severe the flooding was. With strong spirit, we worked together to remove the waste. We believe that through real action like this, gradual and meaningful change is possible.”

The cleanup was not without risks. Sharp bamboo thorns concealed within the debris required the team to work slowly and cautiously to avoid hand injuries. In addition, rocky terrain along the riverbanks increased the risk of slipping, demanding constant awareness and teamwork to ensure everyone’s safety.

River pollution remains a widespread issue across Indonesia and around the world. When waste is dumped into rivers, it not only degrades water quality but also threatens ecosystems and accelerates the flow of trash into the ocean. Floods worsen this problem by carrying accumulated waste downstream in large volumes.

Routine cleanups like this one, made possible with support from partners such as ERANGE EV Tires, play a crucial role in reducing environmental harm while setting an example of responsibility and action. Through consistent efforts, the 4ocean Java River Team aims to restore river ecosystems, protect surrounding communities, and help prevent waste from reaching the ocean.
