Project Merchandise and 4ocean Tackle Polluted Coastline

Dika, 4ocean Indonesia Content Correspondent

When 4ocean Java’s Beach Teams 1 and 2 set out for Lampon Beach, they weren’t just carrying sacks, ropes, and protective gear—they carried the support of Project Merchandise, whose partnership helped make this cleanup possible. While our partners couldn’t be on the ground with us, their backing gave our crew the strength and resources to take on another stretch of coastline under threat.

Like many beaches in Java, Lampon faces relentless waves of plastic pollution. Waste comes not only from visitors but also from a large river mouth nearby, which funnels debris straight onto the sand. The 44-kilometer ride from our base to the site took about 1 hour and 20 minutes by motorbike, giving the crew plenty of time to reflect on the challenge ahead. By the time we arrived, spirits were high, and after a quick briefing, the team fanned out into their assigned zones to begin the hard work of restoring the shoreline.

It was clear from the start that the task wouldn’t be easy. Plastic bags, bottles, cups, shoes, flip-flops, cans, foam, glass shards, and even wooden debris littered the beach. Strong winds made the work even tougher, scattering lighter pieces of trash across the sand, while large piles of organic material like bamboo trapped plastics deep inside. Despite the obstacles, teamwork carried us forward. Sacks filled one after another, and crewmates pushed through the heat and distance, manually hauling the heavy loads to a weighing station far from the beach since vehicles couldn’t reach the site.

By the end of the day, the effort paid off. The crew collected 95 sacks of trash weighing 2,571.6 pounds in total. The shore was visibly cleaner, safer, and more welcoming—not just for people, but for the marine life that depends on a healthy environment. Removing plastic and hazardous debris doesn’t just improve appearances; it prevents toxic materials from breaking down into microplastics, protects visitors from sharp glass and rusty metal, and shields animals from deadly entanglement or ingestion.

Reflecting on the cleanup, one team member shared: “Today we learned that cleaning up a shoreline isn’t just about picking up plastic—it’s about caring for our planet and protecting it from a very real threat. We know this problem won’t be solved in a single day. But with passion and consistency, the 4ocean Java team will create real change for generations to come.”

This cleanup at Lampon Beach was more than just an environmental action—it was a reminder of the power of collaboration. Thanks to the dedication of our beach teams and the crucial support of Project Merchandise, this operation was a success. Partnerships like these show that when businesses and communities work hand-in-hand, we can protect more coastlines, safeguard marine habitats, and inspire others to join the movement.

Together, we’re not just cleaning beaches—we’re building a legacy of a bluer, healthier ocean for everyone.
