Rip Curl has been one of the leading surfing companies in the world since 2000. Every year, the large surfing community in Indonesia gathers in Padang Padang to witness the legendary Rip Curl Cup, where the most talented surfers compete and perform at Bali’s mythical waves.
Aside from sponsoring water sports athletes and hosting surfing events, Rip Curl is also dedicated to ocean conservation. The company promotes “community and environment” by supporting local environmental groups in rehabilitating our oceans and ecosystems.
To bring attention to the plastic crisis, we partnered with Rip Curl Indonesia and brought our Pull-A-Pound Program to the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang! The event kicked off with a beach cleanup joined by volunteers, professional surfers, and Rip Curl and 4ocean team members.
Participants were led by our 4ocean captains and enthusiastically cleaned the coasts of Padang Padang in preparation for the Cup. Trash collected during the cleanup was transferred, sorted, and recycled at our Bali facility. To make this any more special, recycled materials from the cleanup were beautifully transformed into an art installation by renowned eco artist, Reyanne Mustafa, and the 4ocean artisan team!
Reyanne and 4ocean artisans’ collaborative art is installed at Rip Curl’s flagship store in Canggu, Bali. They mainly used recovered ghost nets and cords to create the intricately weaved details of the ocean painting. The artwork highlights the beauty of Canggu's iconic surf breaks while drawing attention to the issue of plastic pollution. This aims to spark conversations and move us to actively do each of our part in helping the ocean.
To culminate the successful opening week of the Rip Curl Cup, a partnership kickoff party was held together with a press release to officially announce our collaboration. The 4ocean x Rip Curl partnership marks an impactful expansion of the Clean Ocean Movement, devoted to the protection of aquatic ecosystems and ending the oceanic plastic crisis.
This partnership was also activated throughout their 25 retail stores in Indonesia through stragegic point-of-purchase signage. Through our Pull-A-Pound Program, each piece of merchandise sold from Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang uring the month of August will remove 1 pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines of Indonesia.
Every pound you pull with us will help restore the health of the ocean and support the livelihood of our crew in Indonesia who brave through polluted waters every single day to clean the country’s ocean, rivers, and coastlines.
The Rip Curl Cup has only begun, and more exciting adventures will take place in the coming weeks. A group of elite surfers from all over the world are expected to conquer the roaring waves of Padang Padang. The invite-only competition in August will be joined by international and Indonesian surfing prodigies.
Both fans and barrel riders from the previous year’s competition are all praying for a perfect Padang swell to hit the Rip Curl Cup 2024. The Rip Curl standard is “to guarantee that the world's best tube riders are competing in all-time barreling conditions at Padang Padang”, and anything short of that would fail to give the green-light to run the all-out challenge.
The 4ocean and Rip Curl mission aligns in our love for the ocean. A plastic-free environment is vital to an optimal surfing climate. It’s becoming increasingly important to take action against marine pollution, and the surfing community would be a great ally in our fight.
Here’s to bigger and better waves at the Rip Curl Cup 2024 🌊.
