Routine Riverboom Cleanup Helps Protect Gambiran Waterways

Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent

The 4ocean Java Riverboom Team returned to the Gambiran trash net this week for another routine cleanup mission aimed at preventing plastic pollution from continuing downstream toward the ocean. Located between Yosomulyo Village and Gambiran Village, this section of the river has become one of the team’s key cleanup points due to the large amount of debris consistently caught in the installed nets, especially during periods of strong water flow.

Before departing for the site, Team Captain Ari Surya Prayoga and the crew prepared all the necessary equipment, including sacks, ropes, arco carts, and supporting cleanup tools. With preparations completed, the team headed to the river to begin the day’s operation.

The Riverboom net installed at this location continues to prove effective in intercepting waste before it travels farther downstream. In addition to the main net, the 4ocean Java team has also installed several supporting nets throughout the surrounding waterways between the two villages.

By the end of the cleanup, the team had collected 178.9 pounds of plastic waste across nine sacks.

The majority of the debris consisted of plastic bottles, sandals, foam packaging, plastic bags, plastic cups, toothbrushes, and other single-use waste materials commonly found polluting waterways.

After collection, all sacks were weighed on-site before being transported by truck back to the 4ocean Java base for further sorting and processing.

For the crew, the cleanup represents more than just removing trash from the river. “Stay motivated and never complain about the challenges and circumstances we face,” said Team Captain Ari Surya Prayoga. “What we are doing together with 4ocean holds great value for all life in the future.”

Unlike many cleanup operations that involve difficult terrain or unpredictable weather, the team was able to complete this mission without major obstacles. The smooth operation allowed the crew to focus entirely on efficiently removing waste from the river system.

Still, the amount of plastic found in the nets serves as another reminder of the ongoing pollution problem affecting waterways throughout the region.

According to the team, low public awareness regarding plastic consumption and waste disposal continues to be one of the primary causes of river pollution. The trash captured in the Gambiran nets clearly reflects how much waste still enters waterways through improper disposal practices.

Through routine cleanups and the continued installation of trash interception systems, the 4ocean Java Riverboom Team hopes to help reduce the flow of pollution entering larger rivers and eventually the ocean.

Because every piece of plastic stopped in the river is one less piece reaching the sea.
