Santen Beach Cleanup supported by Abyss Battery

Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent

On January 27, 2026, we returned to Santen Beach with the support of our partner Abyss Battery to continue our commitment to protecting Banyuwangi’s coastline. Located near the heart of the city, Santen Beach is known for its calm atmosphere, local food vendors, and scenic shoreline. Yet behind its beauty, plastic waste remains a visible and persistent problem scattered across the sand and into the surrounding mangrove areas.

Led by Captain Darys Eka Setiawan, our Beach Team prepared sacks, ropes, and full protective equipment before departing by motorbike for the one hour journey to the site. The morning skies were slightly cloudy when we arrived, and without delay, we began our cleanup. We started by combing the northern stretch of the beach before moving into the mangrove forest, where plastic debris had become trapped beneath the roots. After clearing the mangrove area, we continued south along the shoreline, covering as much ground as possible.

Hours of steady work resulted in dozens of filled sacks lined up for weighing. Each sack was carefully transported to a designated collection point, documented, and weighed to ensure accurate reporting before being loaded onto a pickup truck and brought back to the 4ocean Java base. By the end of the cleanup, we had removed a total of 860.6 pounds of waste across 36 sacks. This included 272.2 pounds of plastic waste and 588.4 pounds of mixed debris, a clear reflection of the scale of pollution affecting this popular coastal destination.

The work was not without challenges. Transporting the collected waste required multiple trips by motorcycle due to the considerable distance to the weighing area. In the mangrove forest, muddy terrain made movement difficult, and debris hidden beneath the roots demanded extra caution and effort. Despite these obstacles, our team worked together to ensure that every sack was safely evacuated.

For our crew, this cleanup was about more than numbers. As Rendy Yoga Pratama shared, beaches should be safe homes for marine life and welcoming destinations for people to enjoy. Instead, pollution has turned many shorelines into threats to the ecosystem. He emphasized that this situation requires consistent and concrete action to create lasting change and protect the environment for future generations.

Santen Beach is more than a recreational space. It is part of a living marine ecosystem that supports countless forms of life and provides livelihoods for coastal communities. The continued presence of plastic waste serves as a reminder that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility. With the support of partners like Abyss Battery, we will continue taking direct action to remove waste, protect coastal habitats, and inspire communities to reduce pollution at its source. Through consistent effort, we aim to ensure that Santen Beach remains a place of natural beauty and ecological value for years to come.
