Satelit Beach Cleanup With Support From Aqua Expeditions
Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent
The 4ocean Java Beach Team, led by Captain Darys Eka Setiawan alongside Agus Wahyudi, Christian Adi, Edi Wancono, Moh. Hibaidulloh, Rendy Yoga Pratama, and Sigit Jupriyanto, returned to Satelit Beach to continue cleanup efforts at one of the most consistently impacted shorelines in the region.
Satelit Beach remains heavily affected by plastic pollution due to its close proximity to a river mouth, where increased river flow carries large volumes of waste downstream before ocean currents push it back onto shore. This cleanup was supported by our partner, Aqua Expeditions, whose support helps sustain continued action in locations where pollution accumulates faster than it can be removed in a single effort.
The Beach Team conducts routine cleanups at this location twice a week, yet the volume of waste remains a persistent challenge. Plastic waste, organic material, and non plastic debris are found throughout the shoreline, reflecting the ongoing pressure placed on coastal areas connected to river systems. Equipped with cleanup tools and full personal protective equipment, the team began work immediately upon arrival, prioritizing collection before the tide rose further.
Despite limited time on site, the crew successfully filled dozens of sacks with collected waste. Mixed waste dominated the findings, alongside microplastics and non plastic debris embedded in sand and tangled along the shoreline. Once collection was complete, the sacks were gathered in a designated area for weighing and documentation before being transported to the 4ocean Java base using a pickup truck.
By the end of the cleanup, the team recorded a total of 2,299.5 pounds of waste removed from Satelit Beach highlighting the scale of pollution that continues to arrive at this location with each tidal cycle.
Reflecting on the cleanup, Sigit Jupriyanto shared that the beach offers natural beauty shaped by the vast ocean and that caring for it is a shared responsibility. He emphasized that every piece of waste removed from the shoreline represents a positive habit that must be built collectively in pursuit of cleaner beaches, cleaner oceans, and a better future.
The cleanup presented several challenges for the crew. Waste mixed with water and mud became significantly heavier, requiring extra effort to transport it to the weighing area. Mixed waste also proved difficult to manage, particularly non plastic materials tangled in ropes, which required additional tools and more time to separate safely.
Satelit Beach plays an important role in the Muncar region as a docking area for fishing boats and a source of livelihood for nearby communities. Ongoing pollution at this site is deeply concerning, as it directly impacts both the local economy and marine ecosystems. Thousands of pieces of debris continue to wash ashore, underscoring the urgency of sustained cleanup efforts.
In response, the 4ocean Java team has committed to regular cleanups at Satelit Beach to reduce pollution levels over time and protect this vital coastal area. Supported by partners like Aqua Expedition, the team remains focused on continuous waste removal, pollution prevention, and community education. Through these efforts, we aim to help create a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment for present and future generations.
