With support from Mount Gay, two Riverboom teams from 4ocean Java carried out a coordinated cleanup along the Sumbersewu Canal, focusing on restoring water flow and removing accumulated waste that had been obstructing the canal. The operation brought together Riverboom Team 1 and Team 2, demonstrating how preparation, teamwork, and shared purpose can turn a heavily impacted waterway into a cleaner and more functional environment for the surrounding community.
Before departing, both teams carefully prepared all necessary equipment, including sacks, waders, machetes, sickles, gloves, and rakes. Once ready, the teams traveled together to the cleanup site, arriving after a short journey of approximately 15 minutes. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed by local residents, a reminder of how closely connected the canal is to daily life in the area.
Without delay, the teams entered the canal and divided responsibilities based on conditions in the field. Some crew members focused on collecting visible trash along open sections of the canal, while others worked to clear thick grass and vegetation that had grown over the waste and blocked the flow of water. This approach allowed the teams to work efficiently while adapting to the challenges presented by the canal’s muddy terrain and dense plant growth.
Despite the physical demands of the cleanup, the atmosphere remained positive throughout the operation. The teams worked with high energy, sharing jokes and encouragement as they progressed. Gradually, the impact of their efforts became visible as piles of trash were removed and the canal’s water began flowing more smoothly. Once collected, all sacks of waste were transported to the weighing area to record the results of the day’s work.
By the end of the cleanup, the Riverboom teams had collected a total of 1,595.2 pounds of mixed waste, filling 20 sacks. The waste included plastic bags, used drink bottles, styrofoam, sponges, sandals, shoes, and other discarded items that had accumulated in the canal over time. Removing this debris not only improved the canal’s appearance but also helped restore its function as a waterway.
Reflecting on the experience, Riverboom Team Captain Indra Dwi Pramono shared, “For me, this job is extraordinary because it allows us to help solve problems in the community. I feel very fortunate to be part of 4ocean Java. I face many challenges, and the ever-changing daily conditions give me valuable experiences to grow and improve. My hope is that 4ocean Java continues to grow and expands to major cities across the island of Java. Thank you, 4ocean.”
The cleanup at the Sumbersewu Canal was not just about removing trash. It was a clear demonstration of 4ocean Java’s commitment to environmental care, supported by partners like Mount Gay who help make this work possible. Through strong collaboration, careful preparation, and consistent action, the teams were able to restore cleaner conditions and smoother water flow. With visible results on the ground, today’s cleanup stands as a meaningful step toward long-term environmental improvement and community awareness in Sumbersewu.
