When the Sea Returns Everything

Dika, 4ocean Jembrana Content Correspondent

Ria Bomo Beach is known for its peaceful shoreline.

Located in Blimbingsari District, the beach draws visitors with its gentle waves, sea breeze, and quiet atmosphere. But beneath that calm setting lies a growing reminder that the ocean never truly forgets what enters it.

With each tide, marine debris returns to the shore.

Plastic waste carried by rivers and ocean currents has gradually accumulated along the coastline, replacing stretches of clean sand with scattered bottles, packaging, and other discarded materials. The shoreline itself tells a story of pollution coming full circle.

On June 27, the 4ocean Java Beach Team returned to help interrupt that cycle.

Before sunrise, the crew prepared at the 4ocean Java base, checking collection sacks, ropes, gloves, boots, and other personal protective equipment before departing for the approximately one-hour drive to the beach.

When they arrived, they found a quiet coastline marked by debris spread across the sand. Weather conditions suggested the team had little time to waste, so Team Captain Darys Eka Setiawan quickly organized the crew and began the cleanup.

The operation started with a systematic sweep of the shoreline, where much of the plastic waste had become buried beneath layers of sand and drifted bamboo.

Hidden Beneath the Shoreline

Recovering the waste required more than simply picking up what was visible.

Large pieces of bamboo scattered along the beach concealed plastic debris underneath, forcing the crew to move the heavy natural material before reaching the waste trapped below. Every section of shoreline demanded patience, coordination, and persistence.

As the hours passed, the collection sacks steadily filled with plastic debris recovered from beneath the sand and bamboo. What had initially appeared to be a relatively quiet beach gradually revealed the true scale of the pollution hidden across its shoreline.

By midday, rows of filled sacks stood ready for transport.

By the end of the cleanup, the 4ocean Java Beach Team had removed a total of 1,569 pounds of debris, filling 44 sacks recovered from Ria Bomo Beach.

The cleanup included 1,098.1 pounds of plastic waste collected across 36 sacks and 470.9 pounds of mixed waste filling an additional eight sacks. After the material was gathered, each sack was transported to the weighing area before being loaded onto a 4ocean pickup truck and returned to the 4ocean Java base for further processing.

The results demonstrate how quickly marine debris can accumulate when waste is allowed to circulate through rivers and coastal currents unchecked.

The work became even more demanding after the cleanup was complete. The section of shoreline with the greatest concentration of debris was located approximately 500 meters from the weighing station, requiring the team to carry dozens of heavy sacks across the beach before documentation could begin.

A Message from the Crew

"I am very proud to be part of Team Beach 4ocean Java because through 4ocean I can directly contribute to real environmental cleanup efforts, especially in keeping beaches free from plastic waste. We have faced many challenges, and for me, this is an important mission for nature and for all life, ensuring a better future for the next generations."

More Than a Cleanup

The pollution found at Ria Bomo Beach illustrates an important reality: waste rarely stays where it is discarded.

Plastic entering rivers or coastal waters can travel for weeks or even months before tides and currents eventually return it to shore. By then, it threatens marine wildlife, damages coastal habitats, and diminishes places that should be enjoyed by both local communities and visitors.

Cleanup operations remove pollution already present in the environment, but they also highlight the importance of preventing waste from entering waterways in the first place. Reducing reliance on single-use plastics, disposing of waste responsibly, and supporting local cleanup efforts all help break the cycle that repeatedly returns pollution to our beaches.

When the sea returns everything, communities still have a choice.

Through continued cleanup efforts like this one, the 4ocean Java Beach Team is working to ensure that what returns to the shoreline is the natural beauty of the coast, not the waste left behind by human activity.
