Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association

Short for Asociación Rescate y Conservación de Vida Silvestre, or Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association, ARCAS was founded in 1989 by a group of Guatemalan citizens with a specific and urgent purpose: building a rescue center where wild animals seized from illegal traffickers on the black market could be cared for, rehabilitated, and eventually reintroduced to their natural habitat.

Since then, ARCAS has grown into one of the world’s largest and most complex rescue centers. They now receive between 300 and 600 animals from more than 40 species every year. Dedicated to the conservation, preservation, and protection of wildlife, ARCAS also invests in environmental research and education, assists in the creation and management of protected natural areas, and drives sustainable community development, reforestation, and responsible ecotourism.
